The miracle of hope from faith can come out of some of the most difficult experiences in life. Those who are elderly or disabled seem to have more circumstances in their lives that most of us consider depressing. However, some of these very same people are the most joyful, loving and upbeat people that you could meet. What makes the difference? Could it have something to do with lessons they have learned from their past experiences? Or, could it be the miracle of hope from their faith?
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
Those who are able to keep a good outlook on life, no matter what the circumstances, have something inside of them that helps them to filter each and every situation. You have surely met people who were always positive… or seemed that way. They always maintained a good attitude and put things into a certain perspective. No matter how bad things were, they could always be worse. They are thankful that they have the better part.
Hope from faith within the heart always makes a difference. People who seem to be chronically depressed have lost something very important to their well-being. Without hope, there is no purpose in life. Indeed, life becomes something to be endured rather than celebrated and enjoyed.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.”
~ Proverbs 13:12 (NLT)
Living a life without hope in this world is like living without life’s most essential element. Make it a mission to instill some hope and purpose in others by being an encourager. You will do more good than you think. We are not alone in this world but many people do feel alone.
No matter what the circumstances of your life are, good or bad, we do hope that you will find the following story of Jay’s experiences helpful. Our desire for you is that you also find hope wherever it is you find yourself.
Finding Hope When in the Pit of Despair
“Knowing full well that in sharing with you this painful slice of my life experience, I am willing to undergo the unwanted but familiar chills all over again. It is because of feeling a strong obligation to share it with you and that it will be of benefit to you. You will see how and why my adamant refusal to give in to a situation of total despair changed my life pursuit of riches forever.
There was a dark period of time in my life during my travels when I was stranded in a foreign land. It was a time of an unimaginable dire strait and despair, both physically and mentally. There was no real indication that I was ever going to make it out alive. I soon began to consider and eventually embrace the thought that my only way out would be in a cold state and in a horizontal manner!
These questions entered my mind, ‘Do you want to give in and allow them to control and manipulate your mind as well as your flesh and bone before they finish you off... Or do you want to safeguard your heart, mind, and soul for as long as you can? Can you hold on till you, hopefully, gain your precious freedom which had been so unjustly taken away from you?’ It took a while for me to answer these questions. It was a hard challenge to avoid total surrender. One that would halt my ongoing mental and physical torture… Such surrender was becoming more and more enticing in my grim circumstances.
But then, something deep inside me was telling me to fight the odds and not give in. Something that I had not felt before. Something that was a stranger to me. Something that was pulling me inside myself to take a look at who and what I was… Who and what I could be. It was a confusing and frightening experience. It seemed as if my former self-confidence had suddenly vanished and I was actually scared to look in my inner self-mirror. This introspection took place all while also enduring the fright of being stuck in such a horrid place
Hope From Faith
Finally, as if someone had turned on the light switch, I saw what I was supposed to see. It was something that I had neglected and casually passed by all my life. It was pure HOPE! My immediate reaction was a feeling of a curious and chilling calm that suddenly came all over me. There was a whispering voice in my head… ‘Just follow your heart and you will be set free if you want to be!’ Was it my desperate imagination playing tricks on me? Not likely. The feeling and the physical sensation inside me was all too real. Someone or something had given me this thing called HOPE and I was going to fully embrace it for the first time in my now empty life.
Up to this point, I had always believed in a higher power. A higher power that had indeed intervened in my life several times before in the past. One which had inexplicably rescued me from a few life-threatening situations. But this was a whole uniquely new feeling for me. Somehow I knew that I must respect and accept this faith and hope He had so generously given to me. The only reason that I was going to survive this ordeal was because He wanted me to!
It was a humbling moment for me to suddenly realize how completely blind I had been before. His pointed intervention in having caused my survival in those other past situations in my life should have made me aware. But, like many others, I was too blinded by chasing after fame and fortune to see it! There was no longer a feeling of worry taunting me. The old me seemed to slowly disappear into the background and I felt like a changed and better person from that moment on. It seemed as if there was now a new life mission for me ahead. My aimless past life was now being replaced for a new one with a bright and warm guiding light of faith and hope in His hands.
“Hope arouses, as nothing else can arouse, a passion for the possible.”
~William Sloan Coffin
Hope Gives Strength To Fight
Yes, it was easy to surrender to that new found hope from faith and follow my heart. A hope that did lead to my eventual escape from that pit of torment and agony! Knowing full well that you may be wondering about the specific details of how I got into and got out of this hell… I ask you to please respect my decision to keep them private. There are many personal issues at stake that dictate to keep these sensitive details confidential. The main objective here was to give you a glimpse of how HOPE can be our only resort… It is what keeps the life we now have intact… And the life we wish to have in the future to be realized.
Because of the new found hope which had been given me, there appeared to be a latent strength in me. A strength to fight exhaustively tooth and nail with my captors. Well, needless to say, the gruesome details shall be spared. And, after a long and arduous time, my new heartfelt and tightly-held hope and faith led the way to my freedom. A freedom that I had previously only expected to come in a lifeless physical form!
Being ecstatic, there and then, a promise was made to myself. A promise to become a new and a better person than I had ever been before. The bright light of hope now within me was put there for a reason. To give a chance for a better life. A new life that is not all about me. A life to do anything and everything to positively impact other people’s lives. There was a silent excitement in me to discover the meaning and the experience of giving of myself to others. There was a sudden thirst for tasting how joyous and gratifying giving can really be like. My impatience was unbearable. I could not wait to share with others how fortunate it is to be granted the gift of hope and faith and keep it alive and vibrant within us.
“When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope.”
~Pittacus Lore, I am Four
The Secret of Happiness Includes Hope
However, the secret is… “Are you the kind of person who likes to give rather than only receive?” Believe it or not, hope and faith do indeed have some strings attached to them. You should allow them to be an active and guiding force in your life path. It is a wonderful feeling, at this point in my ripe life and age, to be content in living a simple lifestyle. It is my conviction to give of myself as much as I can and in any way I can. It has been my good fortune and honor, some years ago, to be awarded the full-time loving home care of my dear, elderly, stroke-stricken friend.
“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
Taking care of my friend is not a chore, a responsibility or service for me, it is my life. Although my caregiving life is a bitter-sweet one at times, I wouldn’t change it for anything in this world. In fact, there will not be any hesitation on my part for putting my life on the line if it would bring lasting comfort and joy to my dear friend.
In a nutshell, after having spent most of my adult years wandering around in life trying to acquire, I have found my calling in a new simple life of giving! Have you assessed your life yet? Have you determined your calling in life?”
“Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around – nobody big, I mean – except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be.”
~J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye
